Yesterday afternoon, Damien officially began his TENTH record. Naturally, in the time it took Shealynn and I to run out and get burgers, he and Swift recorded 5 immaculate tracks of guitar & vocals. Two hours later, 4 more. Their pace is inspiring, as is the end product.
We began our trip down to the studio on Friday, with a stop in Tacoma to see Case Studies, Whalebones, & the Cave Singers. Surrounded by buddies & listening to those jams was the perfect way to say goodbye to ‘home’ for a bit. Cave Singers’ new album NO WITCH is due out on 2/22 from the fine folks at Jagjaguwar, and it will slay.
Saturday morning we found ourselves in Portland drinking juice and maca infused smoothies with Jenna Conrad. That evening the people who create the Pickathon festival [who have big announcements starting today, PS] hosted an incredible benefit show at the Woods. Billed as an evening with Eric Johnson, Andy Cabic, and Richard Swift, it was indeed that and more. Members of their respective bands joined them to end the night as a supergroup of Vetiver // Fruit Bats // Swift // & for a moment also that Jurado dude. There’s a lot of rock ‘n roll history I’ll never get to witness, but hot damn if that didn’t feel like some of the best of it.
